What this market asks

Who will win California's 2026 governor's race on November 3, 2026? Options are listed by candidate. The main candidates are Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton. Each price is the market's implied chance that candidate wins.

The bottom line

Polymarket traders give Democrat Xavier Becerra a 96% chance of becoming California's next governor, and Republican Steve Hilton 4%. About $41.9 million has been traded on this market. Every other candidate is priced at 1% or less.

What moved it

Becerra wasn't always the favorite. In late March 2026 the market priced him below 1%.

Mid-April: a front-runner exits. Becerra jumped from about 1% to 16% around April 17 and to about 37% by April 21. Former Rep. Eric Swalwell, then one of the leading Democrats, had dropped out earlier in April amid misconduct allegations. An Emerson poll taken right afterward showed Becerra up seven points to 10% (CBS Los Angeles). On April 21, Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and 14 Assembly Democrats endorsed him, and he raised more than $1 million on ActBlue in a week (Los Angeles Times).

May: a steady climb. Becerra rose from about 26% in late April to about 64% by the end of May. We couldn't tie this run to a single event, so treat it as unexplained.

June primary: top two set. In California's top-two primary on June 2, Becerra finished first with 28.0%, Hilton second with 24.6% and Tom Steyer third with 22.8% (The Ballot Book). The price went from about 74% just before the vote to 87% by June 7, as a Becerra-versus-Hilton matchup became clear.

Summer to now: the gap widens. Becerra drifted from about 89% in late June to 96% today, as general-election polls showed him leading Hilton in every survey listed by Prediction Edge.

How it settles

  • Resolves to the winner of the November 3, 2026 governor's election.
  • It resolves once the Associated Press, Fox News and NBC all call the race for the same candidate; otherwise it waits for official certification.
  • If results aren't confirmed by July 31, 2027, it resolves to "Other." Full rules.

Who's calling it

  • Decision Desk HQ (Oct 15): Becerra 96%, Hilton 4%, rated "Safe Democratic," with a projected margin of 24 points. Forecast
  • Polling average (FiftyPlusOne, via Prediction Edge): Becerra 54.5%, Hilton 36.9%. Polls

The contrarian take

No credible forecaster we found expects Hilton to win. The market and Decision Desk HQ's model both sit at 96%. The closest dissent is in the polls: a David Jay Wolfson survey taken October 1–2 had Becerra ahead by only 5.6 points, 45.7% to 40.1%, far tighter than the roughly 17-point average (Prediction Edge). For Hilton to win, that single poll would have to be right and the rest wrong.

What to watch

  • November 3: Election Day.
  • After Election Day: the market settles when AP, Fox News and NBC all call the race.
