What this market asks

Who will win Michigan's 2026 governor's race? The main options are Democrat Jocelyn Benson and Republican John James. Each price is the market's implied chance that candidate wins.

The bottom line

Polymarket gives Democrat Jocelyn Benson 94.3% and Republican John James 5.1% for Michigan's open governor's seat, on about $0.3 million traded. Benson was near 56% a year ago. Odds as of 4:00 PM PT, October 15, 2026.

What moved it

Late 2025 to spring: a three-way race. Benson traded mostly between about 56% and 74%. Independent Mike Duggan, the former Detroit mayor, was also running. A February Detroit Regional Chamber poll had the three in a virtual tie (Detroit Metro Times, May 21).

May 21: Duggan drops out. Benson jumped from 70% to 80% on May 21 and reached 84% the next day. That morning Duggan ended his independent campaign, citing a Chamber poll that showed him 11 points behind Benson (NBC News, May 21). That poll had Benson 34%, James 29% and Duggan 23% (same source).

Late August: climb past 90%. Benson rose from 84% in mid-August to about 92% by August 28, and has held in the low-to-mid 90s since. We couldn't tie this to a specific event.

How it settles

Polymarket resolves this market once the Associated Press, Fox News and NBC have all called the race for the same candidate. If they don't all agree, it waits for the official state certification. Polymarket's own market page has the full rules.

Who's calling it

See 1 forecaster call on X for this race, with links to each post →

  • Detroit Regional Chamber poll (May, before Duggan dropped out): Benson 34%, James 29%, Duggan 23% (NBC News).
  • We didn't verify a recent head-to-head poll or forecast, so we aren't citing one.

The contrarian take

We didn't find a credible, dated public forecast that disagrees with the market's view of Benson as a heavy favorite.

What to watch

  • Head-to-head polls of Benson versus James.
